To Switch or Not 2 Switch

That is the question.

If you are reading this, you are probably wondering if you should buy a new Switch or wait. I’ve seen so many videos of people buying the Switch 2 and other people coming out and saying that there aren’t enough new games out, so why spend $500+. Both have very valid reasons. I mean on one hand it’s a new Switch that can play in 4K resolution and it does play games that it couldn’t on the original Switch. One the other side, it is $500+ for what amounts to a technical upgrade at most. There are only a few first party games out and if you don’t like Mario Kart or Donkey Kong then it probably won’t interest you much.

Something else to think about. Bugs…. Not the creepy crawly kind but the software and hardware kind. Like everything that is brand new, there will always be some sort of software or hardware issues. The Switch 1 had the Joycon drift where if you played a lot your joystick would cause your character to move without you touching the joystick. A recent tear down of the Switch 2 showed that Nintendo really hasn’t done much to fix the issue so that might be a concern for people down the line. Also, as of writing this there seems to be a battery draining issue caused by the software.

My point is that nowadays companies have resorted to the ship now and patch later mentality which is sad because I remember a time when Nintendo had it’s gold stamp on their boxes which meant that Nintendo had worked out all of the kinks and the product was as ready to go with very minimal issues. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore as Nintendo. They seem to be following the trends of other game companies and not the pioneer that they once were.

But I digress. So what do you do? Do you buy a Switch 2 now or do you hold out and wait, playing your Switch 1 for a while longer while more 1st party games become available and they work out the kinks. As a parent this is obvious. Wait until September or October so that you can buy one for Christmas and by that time more games will be announced and there will have been multiple software updates fixing any major issues.

Plus, I’m sure we all remember a Christmas or Hanukkah where we got a video game console or game that we had so badly wanted and how special memory is still today.

For me, it was the Nintendo Entertainment System. I had wanted one so badly but thinking that our family would never be able to afford one. My parents however worked extra shifts to be able to afford one and on Christmas morning I woke up and was absolutely amazed at the present that I opened. My very own NES with Mario Bro’s. I will never forget my Dad helping me unbox it and set it up for me while I anxiously waited. Then he told me and my sister that he had to “test” the game to see if it worked or not. It did and an hour later I finally got to play my first video game.
